Probably your best use of assonance (and inner rhyme) I've ever seen from you. This has a very strong paradox that is made more ironic by a very gentle style. Wonderful piece.

I am not a dog lover. Lily is one of only two or three dogs with whom I have lived that I have unreservedly loved. When I speak of people I admire, I will often say, S/he keeps faith with the world, and with people. Lily does that. She communicates that there is no place in the world that she would rather be than leaning up against you looking out at her small world together. She will stay that way for a very long time: she is loyal and she keeps faith.

Your poem is not just about her keeping faith with you; it very much concerns you keeping faith with her. She trusts you absolutely to do so, and that trust will be honored. This has poignant and well crafted images, a fine, subtle rhythm, and a final paradox that I truly understand. Nothing is as constant and true as her inconsistent and compromised heart.

And no, I have no idea why this site has replaced my name with a number. Don't know how much I care, but it is curious.
