      Right lets clear things up...

as much as i respect other peoples comments i have to say that it is clear what this poem is about. I am doing an English Higher Exam on this poem tomorrow and i think that considering i have been studying it for some time i know what im on about.

As for the explanation of sex... Bull!

      Childhood memories.. yes!

I believe with all my heart that... the theme and idea of this 2 part poem is that 'Nothing Lasts Forever' I believe that Heaney is not just talking about an event and a story! he is giving a metaphorical explanation of life! As we grow older we begin to accept failure and death.

The first verse is longer and the memory of the actual event taking place and the second is short and deals with the reflection of picking, the results, the concluding events. The first paragraph is saying... 'There is hope...' while the second is saying 'It always ends in disappointment.'

      Hope and Disappointment.

Something beautiful, inspirational and lovely can go horrible, fermented and sour.

But the concluding sentence gives us more hope ' Each Year i hoped they'd rot...'

And then it is contrasted with disappointment '...knew they would not.'

Even though these children knew each year that after picking the beautiful blackberries that they would rot and go to waste it still did not stop them from doing it again the year after. Its the love for the picking.

      Sex.... pah!
