    • POEM: The Red Wheelbarrow by William Carlos Williams (3/5/2007 3:36:00 PM)

I think this poem is brilliant, but it took me a while to understand it. The wheelbarrow is man-made, the rain water is God-made (or whatever you believe- the important thing is that it cannot be imitated by humans) , and the chickens are domesticated animals. The chickens are important because they are God-made, but man-tamed. It's Koan, a Buddhist illustration of how the divine and the ordinary can become one, or at least closely related.

    • POEM: On Being Brought From Africa To America by Phillis Wheatley (2/22/2007 12:50:00 AM)

First of all, Phillis Wheatley is a SHE, not a he. Second, can you not hear the sarcasm in her voice? I suggest that you find another version of this poem... in the original, words were italicized, giving them extra emphasis on the satirical tones behind them. The words are Pagan, Saviour, Christians, Negros, and Cain. Re-read it looking for the italics and there is a dramatic difference. And look for the sarcasm... you'll see it if you look for it.
