    • POEM: Alone by Edgar Allan Poe (3/27/2007 8:42:00 PM)

If you are familiar with Poe’s life you would know that he stood alone with his thoughts and his feelings. Only on paper would he share his inner-most fears and joys. In 'Alone' he is really not stating that he is physically alone, but that he is alone in his thoughts-regressing back to his memories of an eventful, spirited time. This is what makes him different from others and no one will ever understand why he feels this way. All that he has experienced he has felt alone, no one has felt how he has felt because he is unique. He has chosen to be and feel this way even though he is in pain; he has accepted this 'good or ill' even though people may see this as a mystery. I can relate to this poem, and that is why I have studied it over and over since I began reading it back in 1993. Poe was ahead of his time almost prophesizing his end since his death was a “mystery.” And remember, his terrible suffering was reflected in almost every story and poem he wrote.
