Red Smith's last comments on poems and poets

    • POEM: I Carry Your Heart With Me by Edward Estlin Cummings (11/8/2007 1:17:00 AM)

I was reading some of the other comments, and I have to say that Corrina's comment sort of rubbed me the wrong way. Does if really matter what forum you hear a piece of poetry in, as long as the poem moves you in some way? How else would she have been introduced to this poem - if at all? !

Cummings had, and used, several great gifts that are the foundation of all great poetry.

One of his gifts was the ability of indirect communication. He could use words to create a mood, to implant ideas, images and emotions in the minds of his readers, without being explicit, and sometimes without the reader really knowing where the idea came from.

This is ironic, being that this poem touched so many people indirectly as well through the movie 'In Her Shoes.' I feel EE Cummings would have liked this form of irony!

Anyway, it is a great love poem (defining many kinds and levels of love) no matter how this poem was introduced to you.

(some of the above reference to his gifts are an excerpt from http: //lovepoems.yu-hu.com/cummings/reading_ee_cummings.shtml Reading and understanding E. E. Cummings) .
