    • POEM: The Horses by Edwin Muir (11/17/2007 2:17:00 AM)

The horses did nothing for me but create doubt and thoughts of contradiction. The final line created the impression that the beginning was just a repeat of the past and nothing new was occurring. It created the impression that humanity had just taken a step back in time and it was just bound to make the same mistakes over again. The poem makes me doubt that humanity can actually proceed past the mistakes of the past and create new ones, to continue its story of depression and despair. The poem also creates contradiction because of the lines, “If on the stroke of noon a voice should speak, we would not listen…” I highly doubt it. I mean if a voice speaks you always listen but to choose to respond is another option in question. The whole concept of the poem is almost entirely unimaginable to me because I personally doubt that there would be survivors to even repeat the past’s mistakes. I personally don’t hold any real regard towards this poem because it just didn’t make sense to me.
