This poem refers to the passage of time, using the 'life-cycle' of blackberries (ripening, picking, and eventually expiring) to indicate the aging process. Time is something that when we are young we enjoy; as children we always compare ourselves to other children using age- the older the better. Later on, we begin to wish that we could slow or stop the aging process. I think it is effectively depicted in this poem, as the tone during the first few lines is one of growth and incline. Later, especially at the conclusion, it turns melancholy and disappointed.
