    • POEM: Annabel Lee by Edgar Allan Poe (10/30/2008 12:01:00 PM)

Am I the only one who sees this as childish and irrational love? The narrator tells the story so we must analyze his intentions. He feels the girl was taken from him and killed by the sea, he thinks the angels were jealous of them, he obsesses over her even after death. This is merely a poem about a man unable to cope with his past, creating childish excuses to maintain the illusion and deny the reality. Ultimately showing that the inability to cope with traumas of the past can lead to dangerous habits and states of mind. Case in point: Vladimir Nabokov's novel Lolita, which was inspired by this poem.
