    • POEM: In A Dark Time by Theodore Roethke (5/10/2009 11:06:00 PM)

IN A DARK TIME is a great poem of mood and tone, of a man's encounter with 'self' or 'Self', a searching for his truer, deepest identity. 'Which I is I? ' the speaker asks. Anyone who ever experienced an 'identity crisis' may identify with this poem. Richard Lee Van Der Voort, M.A.

    • POEM: ** Sanctuary ** by Sulaiman Mohd Yusof (4/26/2009 4:19:00 AM)

Baffling! I taught modern & contemporary poetry 61-74, was poet-in-residence at two universities, and published about a 100 poems during that period. I valued the Confessional School of poetry especially, and poems whose MEANING was clear, poems about something, something one could relate to. I don't value vagueness in poetry. Also, 'blood sweat & tears' is a tad trite, is it not? But, we don't all like the same kind of poetry.

    • POEM: Hasta La Vista by Sulaiman Mohd Yusof (4/26/2009 4:11:00 AM)

I don't get an overall theme, other than, something about death or dying, but what? What is the attitude the poem (poet) intends to convey? Yes, imagery is poetic and somewhat striking, BUT, what is the intended effect? Not clear. As a personal preference, I prefer, I like to know what the poem is about SPECIFICALLY. I am a tough critic, but hopefully helpful and fair.
