    • POEM: Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou (1/8/2010 11:38:00 PM)

@ Paul Julian: If you mean your own poem, I'm sorry, the subject matter isn't even the same. Although yours certainly has its own rhythm and meter and evokes certain images, although it *is*, in my mind, pretty darn good, I find something about it a little off. The rhythm is a little too halting for my taste.

Hmmm... Maybe that was deliberate. I'm guessing by the end, Mr. Man is supposed to be panting, yeah? So why does he *start* off that way?

Like I said in a previous comment, I've never been a man... Maybe I've got it backwards. :)

    • POEM: Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou (1/8/2010 11:30:00 PM)

It's interesting to me how this poem is being critiqued. Without meaning to start a male/female debate, I have to point out that my observation (based on an admittedly small sampling of comments) seems to point to a gender divide. Men are left indifferent, while women seem to find it inspirational, at least.

Any person who thinks even ten minutes of inspirational 'feeling good about yourself' feelings is a waste of time.. well, let's just say I don't understand how that can be. Again, maybe it's a male/female thing. I dunno: I've never been a man. :)

All that said, part of the problem with poetry is that it's best listened to than read. When you hear it (or read it out loud) , it comes alive. Every time I read this poem I hear Dr. Angelou herself reading it. Superimposed on that is a 10 year old girl I heard reciting it at some point. Both are beautiful versions, both spoke to me, both remind me of who I can be, and yes, either way it makes me feel good. I'd rather feel good for a few moments at a time than any other alternatives I can think of.

      Wouldn't you?
