    • POEM: Walloping Window Blind, The by Charles E. Carryl (4/28/2010 10:22:00 PM)

I don't know a significantly longer version, but I do know that the version given here has been heavily bowlderized. (Basically, every time the rhyme fails in this version, you can assume something has been cut out.) In the original, 'the cook was Dutch, and behaved as such, ' the mariners shot at the whistling bee rather than soaring with it, and, in the end, they hijacked the ship from the torriby zone (which is further identified as a Chinese junk) and 'left the crew of the junk to chew / On the bark of the rub-a-gub tree.' Also, instead of the crew's stopping at four-o'clock for a pot of peppermint tea, the original has the lines, 'And the Binnacle-bats wore waterproof hats / As they danced in the sounding sea.'

Why that last should have been changed, I cannot imagine.
