    • POEM: Still I Rise by Maya Angelou (2/26/2012 9:25:00 AM)

This poem, to me, is a resounding message of hope. The repetitive use of the phrase “I rise” throughout the poem shows an undying hope and optimism that is unwavering and will not falter by being “shot with words, cut with eyes, or killed with hatefulness”. Maya shows her purpose with this poem through the first person very clearly, that she will rise through hatred, racism, and history itself to be free and loving. The end of the poem portrays beautiful imagery and a sense of freedom to me, “Out of the huts of history's shame, I rise. Up from a past that's rooted in pain, I rise.” Gives me this imagery of someone opening a door into a free world, free of hated and pain, and starting a new life. This poem is enough to make a person feel free and inspires people to work in the pursuit of that freedom for everyone.
