    • POEM: Still I Rise by Maya Angelou (2/29/2012 7:37:00 PM)

The poem “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou uses the themes of racism, discrimination and pride to accurately describe the struggle that black women would face living in the America. The poem left me with a feeling of inspiration because of how the poet describes the prejudice she was faced against which is evident in the first stanza where she writes how the racists can, “write me down in history with your bitter, twisted lies.” And how she over came these stereotypes by being proud of who she was and what her ancestors had to endure while working as slaves. The poet also writes how she is the hope and inspiration for people who are faced with discrimination by stating, “I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide… Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise.”
