    • POEM: Still I Rise by Maya Angelou (2/27/2012 4:17:00 PM)

“Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou, is a powerful and inspirational poem about rising above racism and adversity. Maya Angelou’s use of similes and visual language masterfully conveys her resiliency and empowerment in the struggle against racism. For instance she uses the permanence and power of the moons, suns and tides to convey her resilience and hope. This resiliency against racism is further illustrated by the repetition of the phrase “still I rise” throughout the poem. Maya Angelou’s sense of empowerment is conveyed through the metaphor, “I’m a black ocean, leaping and wild” and the gifts of pride passed on from her black ancestors. Overall this poem speaks to the enduring power of hope and determination of the human spirit to rise above hate and racism.
