    • POEM: Still I Rise by Maya Angelou (2/27/2012 6:19:00 PM)

I like this poem because it clearly shows the emotion of the writer. She uses very powerful language and very strong images to describe her feelings of the unfairness of the world. This poem has traditional structure but a vey untraditional meter and colloquial language. Just like a person can have a very traditional and old school soul but he/she has a very modern outlook. This poem is most definitely written from a woman’s point of view. Words such as: “Sassiness”, “Haughtiness” and “Sexiness” are words that would never be used by a man. At the end of 7th stanza, the image of the woman is a black ocean bearing a tide of new free life. The theme deals with racism and the defiance of an oppressed but I found it doesn’t present a straightforward racism; however, I actually can feel the hidden meaning that she is trying to cast light upon.
